About this tool
Converts between metric and imperial weight (technically mass) units. Enter a value in any unit and see all the others instantly.
Canadian quirks
Like length, Canada officially uses metric for weight, but plenty of contexts still use imperial:
- Metric: groceries, lab work, science, freight.
- Imperial: personal body weight (lbs), gym equipment, deli meats by the pound, mailing letters (oz).
The deli counter scale shows both. Doctors' offices typically use kg but patients still ask "how many pounds is that?". This tool handles either direction.
Mass vs weight
Pedantic but accurate: kilograms measure mass, pounds measure force. In everyday Earth surface use they're proportional and interchangeable. On the Moon you'd still mass the same in kg but weigh about 1/6 as much in pounds. This tool treats them as interchangeable because that's how everyone uses the terms day-to-day.
Tons: which one?
- Metric tonne (t): 1,000 kg = 2,204.62 lb. Used internationally.
- Short ton (US): 2,000 lb = 907.185 kg. Used in the US.
- Long ton (UK): 2,240 lb = 1,016.05 kg. Used in the UK historically.
When someone says "a ton" without context, Canadians usually mean the metric tonne. Americans usually mean the short ton. Always specify if precision matters (shipping invoices, contracts).
Frequently asked questions
- Why is a "stone" a thing?
- British/Irish weight unit for personal weight. 1 stone = 14 lb = ~6.35 kg. Common in the UK ("I weigh 12 stone 4"). Rarely used in Canada but pops up in British media and fitness contexts.
- What's a troy ounce?
- A different ounce, used only for precious metals. 1 troy oz = 31.103 g, vs the regular avoirdupois ounce = 28.350 g. Not in this tool — if you're trading gold or silver, you need the troy ounce specifically.
- Why does my baby's weight come in both g and lb at the hospital?
- Tradition. Hospitals record both because Canadian parents are typically more familiar with pounds and ounces for infant weight, but charts and medical records use grams. 7 lb 8 oz = 3,402 g.
- How accurate are the conversions?
- Exact, to the precision of the internationally-defined pound (1 lb = 0.45359237 kg exactly). Displayed numbers are rounded for readability.
